A Falmouth house caught fire late Sunday afternoon when flames from an outdoor grill climbed the back of the house and spread into the attic.

Firefighters who arrived at 12 Brookside Drive shortly after the homeowner called 911 around 4:45 p.m. saw flames coming over the roof line of the two-story colonial and billowing smoke, Falmouth Fire Chief Howard Rice Jr. said at the scene.

“I was the first one here, and we had heavy smoke coming out of both eaves,” Rice said shortly before 6 p.m. as firefighters from Falmouth and Westbrook continued to look for any smoldering material.

No one was injured in the fire, but the house had flame damage to the rear and extensive smoke damage throughout, Rice said.

Rice said he credited the neighboring Westbrook Fire Department for getting an engine to the scene quickly and an exceptional response from volunteer firefighters from Falmouth, considering it is a holiday weekend.

“We had the fire under control in 15 to 20 minutes,” he said.

Rice said he did not know exactly how the grill fire spread to the house, but warned people not to leave a grill unattended and to keep it away from the house.

Firefighters did not have an immediate estimate of how much the damage will cost to repair.
