CONCORD, N.H. — As the summer hiking season gets underway, New Hampshire’s Fish and Game Department is offering Hike Safe cards for people to support search and rescue efforts, and be exempt from liability for repaying such costs.
Hike Safe cards may only be bought online, $25 for an individual or $35 for a family. The cards are good through the calendar year.
The department has sold nearly 1,400 cards, bringing in over $36,000.
In recent years, the department has conducted an average of about 180 search and rescue missions each year. Under state law, the department can pursue reimbursement for rescue costs if the person rescued acted with negligence.
“Whatever outdoor activity you enjoy the Hike Safe card is your backup plan for the great outdoors,” said Fish and Game Director Glenn Normandeau. “Buying a card is a great way to help support Fish and Game’s search and rescue activities.”
