A Texas man had to be carried off the Appalachian Trail near Mooselookmeguntic Lake after he broke his ankle, the Maine Warden Service reported Thursday.

Charles Smith, 69, of Plano, Texas, was hiking a section of the Georgia-to-Maine trail Wednesday when he hurt himself near the intersection with the Bemis Trail Track just before noon, wardens said.

Wardens and volunteers spent about four hours moving Smith a half mile over very steep terrain to get him off the trail. Fire and rescue workers from Mexico, Rumford and Byron and members of the Mahoosic Mountain Rescue Team assisted in the operation.

Smith was taken to Rumford Hospital and then moved to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
