MIAMI — Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton underwent surgery Sunday on his broken left hand, and the timetable for his return remains four to six weeks.

Stanton hurt his hand while swinging during Friday’s game against the Dodgers. When sidelined he led the majors with 27 homers and 67 RBI.

The injury means Stanton will miss the All-Star Game, and it’s a big blow to a team that was shut out by the Dodgers on Sunday to fall 15 games below .500.

“From everything we’ve got, the surgery was a success,” Manager Dan Jennings said, “and now you just go through the healing process and the rehab process to have him back.”

PIRATES: The odd career of outfielder Jose Tabata took another turn when Pittsburgh designated him for assignment for a second time.

Tabata, who signed a six-year contract in 2011 and is due $4 million this season, hit .289 in 27 games with the Pirates after beginning the season at Triple-A Indianapolis.

General Manager Neal Huntington said he believes Tabata is open to returning to the minors if he clears waivers.

YANKEES: Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, out since May 19 with a sprained right knee, will be in Class A Tampa on Monday and the Yankees anticipate he will begin playing in rehab games later in the week.

TIGERS: Detroit Manager Brad Ausmus said Justin Verlander will start Tuesday night against Pittsburgh. The right-hander didn’t pitch at all this season until June 13 because of an arm problem, and after making two starts, he was scratched from Wednesday’s game against Cleveland because of back stiffness.

ASTROS: Right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on May 29, will throw a simulated game early next week in Houston.

RANGERS: Right-handed pitcher Matt Harrison (back surgery) threw his second bullpen session of the weekend before the game and is scheduled to start at Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.

Outfielder Josh Hamilton (left hamstring) could be activated off the DL in time for Monday’s game at Baltimore. Hamilton started in center field at Round Rock on Sunday and left the game after two at bats.

INDIANS: Designated hitter/outfielder Nick Swisher (left knee inflammation) remains with the team as he works to return from the 15-day DL. He’s been sidelined since June 14.

TWINS: Manager Paul Molitor hasn’t determined yet how to reshuffle the starting rotation after right-handed pitcher Ervin Santana returns July 5 following his 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The 32-year-old Ervin, thought to be the No. 2 starter, is in his first year with the Twins after signing a four-year, $55 million contract in the offseason. He also has a $14 million team option for a fifth year.

CARDINALS: Lefty Jaime Garcia is likely to make his next start Thursday against the White Sox, getting two extra days to recover from a groin cramp he sustained running the bases.

St. Louis has a day off Monday and Manager Mike Matheny said he’ll use Lance Lynn and John Lackey on regular rest ahead of Garcia.
