Former UMaine player remains with ECHL team

Former University of Maine defenseman Jake Rutt of Scarborough agreed to terms with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL for next season.

Rutt turned pro late last season, posting a plus-15 plus/minus rating in the 15 games he played with Idaho.

As a Black Bear, Rutt had nine goals and 23 assists in 120 career games.

HART JOINS YALE: Ted Hart of Cumberland, who helped Greely High win state titles in 2012 and 2013, will join the Yale men’s hockey team.

Hart, a forward, also played two season at Phillips Exeter Academy, with 26 goals and 50 points in the 2014-15 season. He was the 2013 Maine Sunday Telegram Player of the Year with Greely.

GOLF

CLUB PRO: Shawn Warren of Windham fired a 2-over 72 and is tied for sixth through three rounds of the 48th annual PGA Professional national championship at Philadelphia.

Warren is four strokes off the lead held by Grant Sturgeon of Mamaroneck, New York, and Ben Polland of Manhasset, New York.

The low 20 after the final round Wednesday will earn spots in August in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

BRITISH OPEN: Reitief Goosen, a two-time U.S. Open champion, made birdie on the first playoff hole to qualify.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Nigel Pearson was fired as manager of Leicester, less than six weeks after guiding the club to safety in one of the greatest relegation escapes in the 23-year history of the Premier League.

Leicester won seven of its last nine games to climb off the bottom of the Premier League and finish six points clear of the relegation zone.

U.S. MEN: Midfielder Brad Davis will miss the Gold Cup with a knee injury and was replaced by defender Greg Garza of Atlas (Mexico).

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

UFC: An Albuquerque, New Mexico, hit-and-run case against a former UFC champion fighter, Jon “Bones” Jones, has stalled due to a delay in obtaining records, prosecutors said.

The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office said a deadline had passed without the state moving forward because prosecutors are still waiting on dispatch reports and medical records for a pregnant woman involved in the crash.

FIGURE SKATING

CHAMPION RETIRES: Simon Shnapir, a two-time U.S. pairs champion, is retiring.

Shnapir, 27, said he planned to coach and work in broadcasting. He won back-to-back national titles with Marissa Castelli in 2013 and ’14, and they finished ninth at the Sochi Olympics.

FOOTBALL

COLLEGE: Maryland Coach Randy Edsall received a three-year extension that runs through 2019.

The extension is worth up to $7.5 million, which kicks in in January 2017, though only $500,000 is guaranteed. Edsall also receives an increase of $71,000 in each of the final two seasons of his original contract.

OLYMPICS

BOSTON BID: U.S. Olympic Committee leaders are sticking with Boston as a candidate for the 2024 Olympics, knowing that the bid has been troubled by tepid polling data and opponents who don’t want taxpayers footing the bill.
