As you may know, the Portland City Council recently voted to continue providing General Assistance for one more year to those asylum-seeking residents of Portland who currently receive it, regardless of the final decision of the state government.

Following the troubling, interminable debates about GA cuts, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to all Portland people who supported us during this difficult battle.

Your solidarity and compassion were critical to all of us, who felt as though we were experiencing another kind of harm and torture after fleeing from it in our home countries.

My deep appreciation goes out to all of you who offered me and my family their personal support if we had to lose our eligibility to receive GA while waiting for our work authorization.

The people of Portland, the mayor and city councilors have saved the dignity and reputation of Portland by voting “yes.”

I am look forward to fully contributing to the Maine economy by putting my skills and experience to use as soon as I receive my work authorization papers.
