Route 1 at the Wells-Kennebunk town line was closed for several hours Monday after a serious crash that injured two people.
The two-car crash at about 8:45 a.m. in Wells closed Route 1 in both directions.
A 2007 Saab driven by Tyler Sullivan, 21, of Salem, New Hampshire, was headed north near the Kennebebunk town line. Witnesses said it was going fast and passing cars when it hit a southbound 2015 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Deborah James, 62, of Freeport, police said in a news release.
The Saab went across the southbound travel lane and hit several trees.
Sullivan was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was listed in stable condition.
James, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, was taken to York Hospital in York where she was treated and released.
A Maine Warden Service accident reconstructionist was helping with the investigation.
The crash led authorities to divert vehicle traffic onto Harriseeket Road until close to 2 p.m.
No charges were filed in the crash Monday.
