U.S. MEN: The U.S. national team will play an exhibition against Brazil on Sept. 8 at Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The game follows a Sept. 4 match against Peru at Washington, D.C. American goalkeeper Tim Howard hopes to return for the games from his one-year sabbatical. The U.S. is 1-16 against Brazil.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Chris Froome is halfway through the Alps, the last obstacle to his second Tour victory, after comfortably holding his race lead in a Stage 18 won in style by Romain Bardet.
Bardet rode alone down the huge Glandon pass and up the 18 hairpin bends of the previously unclimbed Montvernier Laces to take a solo victory at Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne on the second of four days in the Alps, the last big test before the finish in Paris on Sunday.
BASEBALL
NCBL: Joe Coyne hit a two-run double and Tyler Krobetzky added a two-run single to spark a nine-run fourth inning that rallied the Old Orchard Beach Surge (14-20) to a 12-9 win over the Road City Explorers (19-16) at The Ballpark.
GOLF
PGA: Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the Canadian Open at Oakville, Ontario. The 22-year-old Grillo birdied three of the four par 5s at Glen Abbey.
Vaughan Taylor and Brian Harman were a stroke back.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Defending champ Bernhard Langer had a 5-under 65 for a share of the first-round lead in the Senior British Open at Sunningdale, England.
Langer was tied with Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, Americans Michael Allen, Bart Bryant, Marco Dawson, Jeff Sluman and Lee Janzen, and China’s Lianwei Zhang. Tom Watson opened with a 67.
LPGA: Lizette Salas, Katherine Kirk and Dori Carter shared the first-round lead in the Meijer LPGA Classic at 7-under 64 at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan.
Jaye Marie Green and rookie Wei-Ling Hsu were a shot back.
EUROPEAN TOUR: France’s Gregory Havret made a hole-in-one on the 195-yard 13th and shot a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the European Masters at Crans Montana, Switzerland.
TENNIS
SWEDISH OPEN: Benoit Paire of France ousted top-seeded David Goffin of Belgium 6-2, 6-3 at Bastad to reach his first quarterfinals in 15 months.
CROATIA OPEN: Top-seeded Gael Monfils won the last eight games in beating Austrian qualifier Bastian Trinker 6-3, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals at Umag.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Owners unanimously approved the Tulsa Shock’s move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area next season.
