The man whose body was found in the water near Ocean Gateway terminal Monday has been identified as John Fonville, 43, of Portland.

Fonville’s body was discovered around 12:50 p.m. Monday by a passer-by who spotted the fully clothed body in the water next to the walkway to the cruise ship landing at the terminal.

Firefighters first tried to reach the body using fireboats, but could not get to the narrow space between the walkway and wooden pilings by the shore, and so launched a smaller inflatable boat to retrieve the body.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is still investigating his death, which is not considered suspicious. The medical examiner’s tests are expected to be finished in seven to 10 days.
