Two teenagers escaped injury Tuesday when the sport utility vehicle in which they were riding hit a guardrail on the Maine Turnpike in Biddeford.

Maine State Trooper Gavin Hager said Tiffany Holt, 18, of West Newfield was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty in the middle lane on the northbound side of the turnpike just north of Exit 32 when a driver on her right cut in front of her. Holt swerved to avoid the car, and her SUV hit the median guardrail.

Hager said the SUV started to “fishtail” and almost rolled. Holt kept the vehicle upright but two of her tires got blown out.

The vehicle that cut Holt off did not stop. Holt and a passenger, Sarah Dunton, 17, of Sanford, were not injured. Both were wearing seat belts. The Jeep Liberty had to be towed from the crash site.

The accident was reported at 3:40 p.m. Police kept two lanes of traffic moving while waiting for a wrecker to arrive.
