Kennebunk police have charged a local man with criminal mischief for allegedly spray-painting images of a sasquatch throughout town.

Freeman S. Hatch, 36, of York Street in Kennebunk, was charged Monday with criminal mischief and unlawful possession of a scheduled drug after police served a search warrant at his home. The image of a sasquatch in profile was spray-painted around town, but was concentrated in the Kennebunk beach area, according to police.

Kennebunk police had posted on its Facebook page two weeks ago a request for tips about the unusual tag, which depicted the hairy long-armed mythical creature.

“These markings deface public and private property, costing time and money to repair or replace,” police Chief Robert MacKenzie said.

Hatch is scheduled to appear in Biddeford District Court on Nov. 4.
