A woman was seriously injured Saturday night when her car veered into an ambulance on the Maine Turnpike.
Chrisshawn Young-Rice, 48, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was taken to Maine Medical Center after the collision on the northbound side of the turnpike in Arundel. She suffered serious head injuries, according to Maine State Police Trooper Anthony Keim.
The woman was passing the United Ambulance vehicle when she veered into the front of the ambulance, careened into the breakdown lane and then left the turnpike, overturning in adjacent woods, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
McCausland said the two attendants in the ambulance were unhurt. Keim said they treated Young-Rice until another ambulance arrived.
The ambulance was apparently returning to its Lewiston base, McCausland said, and had no patient on board. He said the ambulance didn’t have its emergency lights on.
The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m., McCausland said.
