A Bridgton man was found dead in Peabody Pond late Monday night after he did not return from a fishing trip.

Mark H. Peters, 58, was reported missing by his wife a little after 9 p.m. Monday when he did not return home from fishing at dusk as expected, according to Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service. Peters went fishing alone around 10 a.m. Monday.

Peters’ vehicle was found at the Peabody Pond boat launch in Sebago by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Game wardens and a deputy sheriff searched the pond and around 11:30 p.m. found Peters’ canoe submerged on the Bridgton end of the pond. A short time later, Peters’ body was found floating about 12 feet from shore. A life jacket was found near his body, MacDonald said.

The Maine Warden Service continues to investigate Peters’ death.
