The Portland Pirates saw their losing streak reach five games Friday night at the hands of a host of former Pirates.

Jordan Szwarz, Lucas Lessio and Laurent Dauphin all scored in their old home rink to lead the Springfield Falcons to a 6-1 American Hockey League victory over the Pirates before a crowd of 3,877 at Cross Insurance Arena.

Springfield is now affiliated with the Arizona Coyotes, Portland’s parent club for the previous four seasons, so the Falcons’ lineup was littered with former Pirates.

“We marked it down on the calendar,” said Szwarz, who also notched an assist on the Lessio goal. “It was a date that a lot of us were looking forward to. We have 12 or so guys that played in the organization here last year. It’s always an exciting thing when you come back to the city where you played before.”

Another old friend, goaltender Louis Domingue, held the Pirates scoreless for two periods as Springfield built a 4-0 lead. He finished with 34 saves and denied the Pirates in three power-play opportunities.

“I didn’t think we played terrible,” said Pirates Coach Tom Rowe. “It got out of hand at the end. But every time we had a really good scoring chance, their guy made a really good save.”

Craig Cunningham gave Springfield a 1-0 lead late in the first period with a rebound goal. Dauphin, called up for Portland’s brief playoff run last spring, made it 2-0 midway through the second.

Seconds after the Pirates killed off a power play in which goaltender Mike McKenna stood tall despite losing his stick for a significant stretch, Szwarz got loose on a breakaway and slid a backhander past McKenna to make it 3-0.

Rowe changed goalies at that point, summoning Sam Brittain, but Lessio connected on another power play with a shot from the high slot with a minute remaining in the second period.

“Just trying to slow the game down and see if we can get a little momentum going,” Rowe said. “We had some chances. If we can capitalize on them, it’s a different game.”

The Pirates finally managed to put one past Domingue seven minutes into the third when Chase Balisy pounced on the rebound of a Rob Flick shot and poked it in the net.

Less than two minutes later, Cunningham tipped in a Philip Samuelsson slap shot to give the Falcons a 5-1 advantage. Dustin Jeffrey finished off the scoring with Springfield enjoying a five-on-three power play.

Former Pirates Phil Lane, Greg Carey and Henrik Samuelsson added assists for Springfield.

The Pirates return to action Wednesday night at home against Hartford.

“We’ll come out of it,” Rowe said. “We did some good things in long stretches of the game. No time to panic by any stretch.”
