PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Whoever said goalies are under pressure during shootouts failed to mention that to Portland Pirates goalie Mike McKenna.

McKenna was at his best in Sunday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Providence Bruins. McKenna made 25 saves and notched his 56th victory in a Pirates uniform, moving him past Maxime Ouellet into third place in franchise history behind Martin Brochu (79) and Jhonas Enroth (74).

McKenna stopped Max Talbot on a clean breakaway in the first minute of overtime. Talbot also was unable to score in the shootout, hitting a post, and then McKenna made a pad save on Austin Czarnik and poke-checked the puck away from Colby Cave.

“Shootouts have been part of the game for so long now it’s just part of it,” McKenna said. “The mentality is to try and put everything out of your head that you can. “Sometimes you can really overthink things if you’re trying to remember what somebody did the last time or what they did previously.

“I just try to put everything out of my mind and focus on the puck.”

Kyle Rau, Portland’s initial shooter, scored the only shootout goal when he backhanded the puck past Malcolm Subban (14 saves).

Providence outshot Portland 27-16, but McKenna saved the Pirates.

“He was unbelievable,” Portland Coach Tom Rowe said. “That’s what Mike is capable of, winning us a game and we weren’t on our game at all today. Mike came in and stole two points for us.”

McKenna was brilliant during a first-period power play for Providence (3-8-3) as he blocked four shots.

But he couldn’t stop a shot by Colton Hargrove shortly after the penalty expired. Talbot unloaded a shot from the slot and Hargrove buried the rebound at 14:24.

The lead lasted only 59 seconds before Portland (6-6-0) tied it on Rau’s goal. Dylan Olsen blasted a slap shot from the left circle that Rau deflected past Subban.

Even though Providence outshot Portland 12-3 in the second period, McKenna was flawless and the game remained tied.

McKenna robbed Gary Nunn with a skate save, then made three saves during another Providence power play, including one on Hargrove, who crashed into McKenna and shoved him into the cage.

“He’s a battler,” Rowe said. “He’s a very intelligent guy and he understands the angles real well.

“He’s a capable guy and he did a heckuva job tonight.”

Portland took the lead at 12:37 of the third period when Shane Harper notched his first goal, stuffing home the rebound of a Brett Olsen shot.

But Providence’s Anton Bidh tied it just 46 seconds later, snapping the puck past McKenna from the slot after a pass from Cave.

“Shootouts are part of it,” McKenna said. “I’ve been fortunate that I’ve had pretty good luck with them so far. Ultimately they really are a crap shoot.

“If you talk to the analytics guys, there’s no clear-cut advantage. It’s 50-50. We practice them and try to carry it over.”
