An oil truck that crashed near the headwaters of the Harraseeket River in Freeport on Friday leaked an estimated 20 gallons of oil, but the spill was contained and never threatened the river, police said.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Flying Point and Upper Mast Landing roads, police said. Firefighters, police, the state Department of Environmental Protection and a private cleanup company were dispatched to the scene, slowing traffic in an area that provides access to a large section of town.

The oil truck went off the road, and the impact split a seam in the tank, said David Madore, spokesman for the DEP. The truck was upright but the tank was leaking, he said.

Freeport police officer Nathan Leger said it appeared that the truck driver, who was not named, lost his brakes before the accident. Leger didn’t expect the driver to be issued any citations.

Firefighters cleared the scene about three hours after the crash.

Officials spilled but

Michelle Smith, spokeswoman for Maine Audubon, which manages the nearby Mast Landing Sanctuary, said her organization was aware of the spill and monitoring any impact.
