The city of Portland is relocating its “silver bullet” recycling bins on Somerset Street to make way for the long-delayed housing development known as midtown.

Four of the recycling containers will be relocated across from the International Marine Terminal on West Commercial in a place known as Angelo’s Acre, according to a news release from the city. The other five will be moved to Riverside Recycling Facility at 910 Riverside St.

The bins are being moved Friday to make way for the midtown development, which plans to bring 440 units of market rate housing, a 800-space parking garage and 90,000 square feet of first-floor retail uses to West Bayside.

City officials said in October that construction of the $100 million project, which has been delayed for years because of opposition to its size and design, would begin before the end of 2015. Now officials say they expect to close on the sale of the city parcel during “first part of 2016.” Federated Cos., a Florida-based real estate developer, has agreed to pay $2.3 million for the 3.5 acre parcel.

The city said that it is finalizing plans to have a community meeting in February to discuss the impacts of the construction.
