A woman in Louisiana has been arrested in connection with the death of her grandson, who investigators believe was killed by a gun that was under her pillow, authorities said Wednesday.

Deonca Kennedy, 42, of New Orleans was booked on charges of negligent homicide, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Officers who responded to the scene about 2:12 a.m. Wednesday discovered a 3-year-old boy who had been shot in the chest, authorities said.

The child, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

“The initial investigation at the scene led detectives to believe that Kennedy was asleep in bed with her grandson at the time of the shooting,” the police department said in a news release. “Kennedy’s gun was underneath her pillow and detectives believe it discharged, striking the infant in the chest.”

Kennedy “refused to give a statement or cooperate with detectives,” police said. She and her grandson were the only people in the home at the time of the shooting, the police statement said.

Authorities are still investigating.
