BANGOR — Sigi Koizar scored 21 points on a milestone night, and the University of Maine held off Vermont for a 63-51 victory in an America East women’s basketball game on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

Koizar became the 20th player in program history to cross the 1,000-point mark when she sank a 3-pointer from the left elbow in the first quarter. She finished the night with 1,017 points.

The Black Bears (17-7, 8-1) finished the first half on a 14-8 run for a 31-24 edge, and extended the lead to 59-42 late in the second half.

Liz Wood added 11 points and nine rebounds to help Maine win its 16th straight at home.

Andreana Thomas had 14 points for the Catamounts (7-15, 2-7).

SMCC 83, NHTI 58: Southern Maine CC (18-7, 7-4 Yankee Small College) jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter and cruised past the Lynx (16-10, 8-5) at Concord, New Hampshire.

The Seawolves opened the second quarter with an 8-3 run and pulled away to a 22-point halftime lead.

Amira Jones and Alicia Hoyt each had 16 points for SMCC, while Jordan Turner had 11 points and 10 boards, and Vanese Barnes tossed in 10 points.

Riselly Deoleo had 23 points and 12 rebounds for NHTI.

(1) CONNECTICUT 96, TULANE 38: Breanna Stewart made her first seven shots in a 20-point performance and UConn (21-0, 11-0 American Athletic) easily remained unbeaten with victory over Tulane (15-7, 6-4) at New Orleans.

Moriah Jefferson scored 16 points, Gabby Williams 15 and Katie Lou Samuelson 14 for the Huskies.

(4) BAYLOR 87, KANSAS STATE 52: Alexis Jones scored 15 points without missing a shot and Baylor (22-1, 9-1 Big 12) stretch its winning streak to nine with a win over Kansas State (14-7, 4-6) at Waco, Texas.

Niya Johnson had eight points and 13 assists for the Lady Bears, who scored the game’s first six points and never trailed.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

VERMONT 85, MAINE 68: Ethan O’Day had 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks to lead the Catamounts at Burlington, Vermont.

Darren Payen added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Vermont (14-10, 6-3 America East), which has won four of five.

After the eighth tie of the game at 49-all, Vermont pulled away during the middle of the second half with 14 straight points. The Catamounts took advantage as the Black Bears (8-14, 4-5) went scoreless for 4:50 with four turnovers and four missed field goals during that stretch.

Ilija Stojiljkovic’s layup ended the drought, but Maine never recovered and trailed by double digits the rest of the way.

Aaron Calixte had 15 points for the Black Bears. Devine Eke added 14 and Issac Vann 12.

EMMANUEL 73, ST. JOSEPH’S 61: Rashad Dixon scored 15 points to lead the Saints (4-15, 4-8 GNAC) over the Monks (6-13, 3-9) in Boston.

Emmanuel started the second half on a 17-6 run to pull away from a 33-33 halftime tie.

St. Joseph’s battled back to within 50-44 on a 3-pointer from Marc Corey, but the Saints responded with a run of their own and held a double-digit lead for the last seven minutes.

Quinn Richardson-Newton scored 20 points to lead the Monks. Craig Luschenat added 11 points and Marc Corey had 10 to go along with eight rebounds.

NHTI 105, SMCC 94: Jared Stauffeneker scored 28 points, Dayvon Russell added 23 and the Lynx (18-10, 8-5 YSCC) beat the Seawolves (11-15, 7-4) at Concord, New Hampshire.

NHTI opened the second half with a 15-6 run to take control after entering intermission with a 47-44 lead.

Matt Talbot led SMCC with 19 points and nine boards. John Morgan had 17 points, while Jordan DeRosky and Jack Tolan each tossed in 14.

(3) VILLANOVA 83, CREIGHTON 58: Kris Jenkins scored 22 points, Jalen Brunson had 16 and Villanova (19-3, 9-1 Big East) rolled past Creighton (14-9, 5-5) at home.

Josh Hart added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats, who have won 11 of 12.

(4) MARYLAND 70, NEBRASKA 65: Freshman Diamond Stone had 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks, and Maryland (20-3, 9-2 Big Ten) held on at Nebraska (12-11, 4-6).

Melo Trimble had 14 of his 20 points in the second half as the Terrapins overcame a slew of turnovers.

(5) IOWA 73, PENN ST. 49: Jarrod Uthoff scored 14 points and Adam Woodbury had a career-high 15 rebounds to lead Iowa (18-4, 9-1 Big Ten) past Penn State (11-12, 2-8) for its 15th straight home win.

Anthony Clemmons added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Hawkeyes.

(6) XAVIER 90, ST JOHN’S 83: Trevon Bluiett had 15 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, and Xavier (20-2, 8-2 Big East) overcame poor shooting to hand St. John’s (7-16, 0-10) its 13th straight loss, at Cincinnati.

(9) VIRGINIA 61, BOSTON COLLEGE 47: Malcolm Brogdon scored 27 points and host Virginia (18-4, 7-3 Atlantic Coast) stretched its winning streak to five games by keeping Boston College winless in ACC play.

Sammy Barnes-Thompkins made four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 14 points to lead the Eagles (7-15, 0-9).

(17) MIAMI 79, NOTRE DAME 70: Anthony Lawrence Jr. scored a season-high 18 points on just six shots and Angel Rodriguez added 12 points for host Miami (17-4, 6-3 ACC) against Notre Dame (15-7, 6-4).
