Fred Nutter, the former editorial director of WCSH-TV, known for his smart and witty on-air commentary, has died at age 82.
The Portland station announced his death Saturday, but didn’t say when or where he died.
Nutter joined Channel 6 in 1965 and covered Portland City Hall and then the State House in Augusta. He was eventually promoted to news director and then editorial director.
Nutter was known for his ability to deliver a reasoned argument on a weighty matter one night and then a biting commentary puncturing a politician’s pomposity the next. His commentary always ended with the line, “That’s our opinion, we welcome yours.”
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan, three children and nine grandchildren.
