A Houlton woman has been charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin after she was arrested at the Portland Transportation Center on Saturday.

Maine State Police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency allege that Jessi Polchies, 32, was attempting to take the heroin from Old Orchard Beach to Houlton on Saturday, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said drug agents had been investigating a group that was transporting heroin from Lawrence, Massachusetts, to York County. The agents, he said, learned that Polchies had traveled to Old Orchard Beach to pick up heroin to take to Houlton and that she was due to take a bus back to Houlton on Saturday morning.

Polchies was arrested on an outstanding warrant for operating a vehicle after her license had been suspended and admitted that she was carrying heroin, McCausland said. Agents found 30 grams of heroin and arrested Polchies, who was taken to the Cumberland County Jail. Her bail was set at $10,060, McCausland said, and she is expected to make her first court appearance Monday.

McCausland said more arrests in connection with the case are expected.
