Portland has invited officials from five surrounding communities to participate in a forum that will examine regional housing challenges and opportunities.

Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook and Falmouth are expected to send representatives to the meeting March 23 on the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine. Staffers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are scheduled to present HUD’s 2015 Comprehensive Housing Market Analysis for the Portland-South Portland market area.

“This is another step in our fact finding mission to truly understand our housing challenges and opportunities before we as a Council look at enacting any new policy initiatives to address the housing market in Portland,” said City Councilor Jill Duson, chair of Portland’s Housing Committee, in a prepared statement. “It’s critical that we truly understand the full scope of factors before we move forward.”

The forum, which will run from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. at USM’s Abromson Center, will be open to the public.

“Addressing our housing crisis is the number one thing that citizens ask me about and it’s my top priority as mayor,” said Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling.
