The U.S. Coast Guard towed a Canadian-flagged lobster boat to safety Monday after it became disabled about two miles southwest of Halfway Rock in Casco Bay.

The Coast Guard said in a press release that the captain of the Megan and Michael III contacted the Coast Guard’s South Portland station around 11:15 a.m., reporting that his 52-foot lobster boat had lost all power and was adrift.

The crew of a 47-foot motor lifeboat was sent to help and arrived at 1:30 p.m. The Coast Guard crew towed the lobster boat back to DiMillo’s Pier in Portland.

“The boat crew launched quickly, hooked up tow, and brought them back to land safely,” said Chris Berry, an operations unit controller with the Coast Guard.

The Megan and Michael III had recently been sold to an American buyer and was headed to Portland to be transferred to its new owner, according to the Coast Guard.

Halfway Rock is a barren ledge in Casco Bay. Halfway Rock Lighthouse, which is 76 feet tall, sits on the ledge and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is named Halfway Rock because it is located halfway between Cape Elizabeth and Cape Small, which is in the eastern part of Casco Bay.
