Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland once again played host to a naturalization ceremony on Friday.

The school, which has been the scene of such ceremonies in previous years, was heavily involved in the swearing-in of 58 new Americans.

Students read patriotic poetry, heard guest speakers and met the newest Americans to ask them questions.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Portland conducts many naturalization ceremonies around the state, including one every other Friday in federal court.

Data from the Department of Homeland Security indicate that the number of new citizens naturalized in Maine rose in the last decade but has since leveled off, to slightly fewer than 1,000 people annually.
