RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Marshawn Lynch on the NFL’s reserve/retired list Thursday, making official what was implied in February when Lynch indicated he was ready to end his football career.

Lynch was placed on the list Thursday. It was a procedural step but one that needed to be taken to make Lynch’s intended retirement official.

Lynch stole attention from the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl in February when he posted a picture on Twitter with a pair of green football cleats hanging from a telephone or electrical wire. His agent confirmed a day later that Lynch intended to retire.

Seattle made a series of moves this offseason that indicated the running back who led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl title was ready to step away, including picking three running backs in the NFL draft last week. Lynch would have been an $11.5 million cap hit if he remained on Seattle’s roster for the 2016 season. The Seahawks will save $6.5 million with Lynch’s retirement.

CHIEFS: Kansas City and second-round draft pick Chris Jones, a defensive tackle out of Mississippi State, agreed to terms on a contract, a person familiar with the negotiations said.

The Chiefs traded away their first-round pick last weekend, so Jones was their first selection with the No. 37 overall pick. He is the first of their eight picks to sign, though most should be in the fold by this weekend.

JETS: New York signed cornerback Juston Burris, offensive tackle Brandon Shell and punter Lachlan Edwards, three of their seven draft picks, and waived wide receiver Joe Anderson, who made headlines by standing outside Houston’s stadium with a sign looking for an NFL job last season.

Burris was a fourth-rounder out of North Carolina State who started three seasons for the Wolfpack. He’ll likely compete for a backup spot behind projected starters Darrelle Revis and Buster Skrine, and also play on special teams.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville signed both of its sixth-round draft picks, quarterback Brandon Allen and defensive end Tyrone Holmes.

LIONS: Detroit signed free- agent wide receiver Andre Caldwell.

FALCONS: Atlanta agreed to terms with 22 college free agents, including Georgia defensive linemen Josh Dawson and Chris Mayes.

WASHINGTON: The team signed tight end Jordan Reed to a multiyear contract extension.

BILLS: The team acquired a small plot of land directly next to its existing practice facility in Orchard Park, New York, which includes a field house and an outdoor field. The newly acquired land will be used to expand the Bills’ outdoor grass field.

TITANS: Tennessee hired Ryan Cowden as its director of player personnel.

GIANTS: New York waived tight end Jerome Cunningham and safety G.J. Kinne.
