The Bowie Baysox did not come to Portland with sparkling numbers. They had a 23-34 record and the second-worst pitching in the Eastern League.

But Bowie is thriving at Hadlock Field. The Baysox won their second straight game, beating the Portland Sea Dogs 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Portland managed only five hits and dropped to 20 games under .500 (19-39).

One of the hits was a Nate Freiman home run over the left-field wall in the seventh inning. Freiman, who joined the team on May 11, leads the Sea Dogs with four homers. He also singled.

Portland starter Teddy Stankiewicz (1-6) gave up all four runs on 11 hits and two walks in 51/3 innings. He struck out two.

Stankiewicz, Boston’s 20th-ranked prospect according to Baseball America, got off to a solid beginning to the season. But after Wednesday’s game, and eight allowed runs in his previous start, Stankiewicz saw his ERA rise over a point to 4.52.

After three scoreless innings, Stankiewicz gave up a leadoff double to Chance Sisco, and then a two-out RBI single by Tucker Nathans (younger brother of former Sea Dogs catcher John Nathans).

In the fifth, Stankiewicz gave up another key two-out hit, a two-run single to right by Sisco, for a 3-0 lead. Stankiewicz left after two hits in the sixth.

Reliever Luis Ysla had his best appearance with the Sea Dogs, pitching 22/3 innings, allowing no hits or walks while striking out five. Chandler Shepherd pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
