Portland fire crews responded to 305 Commercial St. before 10 a.m. Thursday for a report of smoke in the building.
A fire department spokesman was unavailable to comment, but a witness who works in the building said six trucks responded to the large, brick building.
The five-story building is called Baxter Place, with retail stores on the first floor and apartments on the floors above.
The witness saw smoke inside before he exited to the street, and said most of the firefighters were venting the building by about 10 a.m.
