SCARBOROUGH — Lilly Volk pitched a perfect game Thursday, striking out 10 in a six-inning game as top-ranked Scarborough defeated eighth-seeded Portland 12-0 in a Class A South softball quarterfinal.

The Red Storm (17-0) will be home against fifth-seeded Windham (13-5) in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“They’re a very talented offensive team and they’ve got a very good pitcher who will keep the ball in the strike zone,” said Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin. “She’s pretty challenging to hit against and can do some really good things with the ball. We’ve got a big challenge ahead of us.”

Volk, a senior headed to the University of Maine, said a perfect game is always her goal.

“It’s any pitcher’s goal,” she said. “They want to throw perfect and that doesn’t happen a lot. I’ve been going all season, throwing one-hitters, throwing two-hitters. To finally hit my goal, I know my coach would be proud and that feels good.”

Added Griffin: “It’s what we expect of Lilly and I think it’s what she expects out of herself. She works very hard and is a very talented kid. It’s pretty rare to have a perfect game.”

Volk only fell behind in the count against one hitter and never allowed the ball to reach the outfield.

“She’s a really talented kid,” Griffin said. “She’s not just physically talented but she’s really talented mentally, too. She established the change-up early in the game. They came out swinging pretty aggressively right from the first inning and I think she recognized that. You need to show that change-up early to keep them off balance. Once she established the change-up, she was real difficult for them.”

The Red Storm scored three runs in the second on four straight singles, including a two-run single by Hannah Ricker that drove in Laura Powell and Lindsey Kelley (2 for 4, double), and Katie Verreault’s steal of home.

Scarborough capitalized on three errors to score twice in the fifth. Chloe Griffin (2 for 4, double, two runs, two RBI) scored on a throwing error and Kaleigh Scoville (two runs) on a groundout by Abbie Murrell.

In the sixth, the Red Storm added six runs against the Bulldogs (10-8), sending 11 hitters to the plate while recording just one out to end it.

Maggie Murphy (2 for 3, walk), Griffin, Scoville, Murrell, Courtney Brochu, Powell, Hunter Greenleaf and Sam Carreiro scored in the inning.

“Even our girls that come off the bench, we don’t have a hole,” Volk said. “Everyone can hit.”
