SANFORD — Two federal grants totaling over half a million dollars are coming to Maine to help improve firefighting.
The Maine Fire Service Institute will receive more than $250,000 for firefighting equipment, breathing apparatus and protective clothing.
The gear will complement a mobile live-fire training trailer that was funded by a previous grant and will be used for training throughout the state. The institute is located in Brunswick.
The other grant will go to the Sanford Fire Department to replace a pumper engine that is more than 30 years old.
The money comes in the form of federal Assistance to Firefighters Grants.
