Margaret “Maggie” O’Neil beat challenger Kathie Purdy in a Democratic primary to represent part of Saco in the Maine Legislature.

O’Neil narrowly beat Purdy 380-354, winning 52 percent of the vote in House District 15.

The two candidates were vying for the seat vacated by Rep. Justin Chenette, who stepped down from his seat to run for state Senate.

O’Neil, 26, is a recent college graduate and first-time candidate for office. She is the daughter of Chris O’Neil, a former state representative. Purdy, 60, is a retired grocery store assistant manager and active Democratic Party member who volunteered for campaigns for Chenette and outgoing Sen. Linda Valentino.
