Church strawberry festival

The 64th Annual Strawberry Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St.

The event will include sales of strawberry shortcakes, jam, ice cream cones and quarts of fresh berries.

Other attractions include a bargain basement, children’s area, silent auction, hot dog stand, bake table, pie auction and a craft show.

Strawberry festival set

The First Parish Church of Brunswick Strawberry Festival is planned for 11 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Brunswick Mall gazebo off Main Street.

The event will feature many strawberry-based treats, including strawberry shortcake on homemade biscuits, strawberry sundaes, jams, pies and quarts of freshly-picked berries.

The cost is $5 to $7. Proceeds benefit the First Parish Music Program.

KITTERY

Sports camps scheduled

The Kittery Recreation Department will offer the following sports camps this summer:

Pee Wee Camp will offer an introduction to basketball skills for ages 4 and 5 from 9 to 10 a.m. July 11-15. Cost is $30.

K-grade 2 Camp for beginner basketball players in kindergarden through grade 2, from 9 to 11 a.m. July 11-15. Cost is $50.

Grade 3 to 4 Camp, for players with some basketball experience in grades 3 to 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11-15. Cost is $60.

Grade 5 to 8 Camp, for the more experienced player, who is looking to improve on his/her skills in grades 5 to 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 18-22. Cost is $130/child or $200/family.

All camps are held at the Kittery Community Center and include a T-shirt.

Helping kids learn finances

Financial adviser Kathryn McKenna and Morgan Stanley of Portsmouth, N.H., will hold a session to help children learn how to earn, save, spend, give and borrow responsibly, at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kennebunk Free Library at 112 Main St.

McKenna will discuss the benefits of having children work for an allowance and encouraging them to work for others.

Celebration of 1854 organ

First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport will hold a centennial celebration of its Hook organ with a special service at 4 p.m. Sunday, off North Street.

The organ dates from 1854 and is Opus 177 of the renowned E. & G. G. Hook Organ Co. of Boston.

The program will include a brief service, congregational singing of hymns, a choral anthem sung by the combined choirs of First Church and South Church and several concert pieces. After the event, the Ladies’ Society of First Church will hold a reception in Ober Hall.

Tours of seven gardens

Tour seven gardens of artists in the towns of Baldwin, Hiram, Parsonsfield and Porter from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in an event benefiting the historical societies of each town.

Each garden has a unique theme. Raffles of a floral quilt and special hybrid daylilies from O’Donals Nursery will be held. Free snacks will be by Grandy Oats.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 on the day of the tour. Rain date is Sunday.

Tickets are available at the MSAD 55 Adult Education office at Porter, town offices and public libraries in Baldwin, Hiram, Porter and Parsonsfield, The Inkwell at Cornish, and garden centers McSherry’s at Center Conway, N.H., Heart & Hand at Brownfield, Nature’s Way at Limerick and Steeplebush Farm at Limington.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH

Lunch, reading program

A free lunch program will be offered this summer for children ages 18 and younger. It is tied in with Libby Library’s summer reading program at 27 Staples St.

From June 28 through Aug. 5, lunches will be served from noon to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, followed by summer reading program activities from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Children don’t have to come for lunch to participate in the activities, nor do they have to participate in the activities if they just want to come for lunch.

Beginning gardening class

The class “Beginning Gardener: Flowers, Shrubs, Design and More” will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Old Orchard Beach/Saco Adult and Community Education, at 40 E. Emerson Cummings Blvd.

Garden expert Karen Casey will detail how to plant gardens, from selecting plants and shrubs to caring for the garden. Cost is $25.

Foreign worker orientation

The Old Orchard Beach Community Watch Council will host a welcome orientation for the 400-plus J-1 seasonal foreign workers in the community beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall, 2 Church St.

The session will include refreshments and an opportunity for each student to become familiar with local banks, the OOB Chamber of Commerce, and resources available in the area. Topics will include local transportation, personal safety, emergency and bike safety, and other topics.

The session is free and all foreign students and their sponsors, housing providers and employers are invited to attend.

Summer solstice paddle

A full-moon paddle on Orland’s Dead River to celebrate the summer solstice will be held Monday night.

Attendees should meet at the Alamoosook Lake boat landing at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery at 8 pm, with boat, paddle and life jackets.

Music festival this week

“The Maine Festival of American Music: Its Roots and Traditions” at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village runs from Wednesday through Saturday, providing a rare opportunity to appreciate Shaker within a wider context of classical and folk music, while celebrating American musicians and composers.

The festival takes place in the Shakers’ 1794 Meeting House, featuring performances by the Portland String Quartet on Wednesday, the Portsmouth Singers with composer Kevin Siegfried on Thursday, a concert with Chris Moore on Friday, a Franco-American fiddling and step-dancing performance by the Don Roy Trio Saturday afternoon and a concert by the Portland String Quartet again Saturday evening.

Craft workshops, walks

Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will offer a series of traditional craft workshops and educational nature walks Saturday at 707 Shaker Road, Route 26.

Traditional craft workshops include “Fused/Pieced Quilting” with award-winning fiber artist Carol MacDougall, $85; “Dovetails Woodworking” with woodworker Chris Becksvoort, $50; “Beginner’s Rug Hooking,” with fiber artist Beth Miller, $70; “Herbal Dream Pillows” with master gardener Betsey Golon, $50; “Beginner’s Woodcarving” with master-carver Norm Devonshire, $50; and “Gelatin Printmaking from the Shaker Garden” and “Simple Book Binding,” both with artist Bonnie Faulkner, for $55 per class.

Resident naturalist Carolyn Fensore will lead “Nature’s Outdoor Classroom,” a 2½ hour hike through the Shakers’ 1,800 acres of diversified habitats. The walks are free but reservations are recommended.

Lake association yard sale

The Bauneg Beg Lake Association Giant Yard Sale is set for 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Hall on Route 4.
