A brush fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in a wooded area off Philbrook Road in Sanford burned about 1 acre.

Sanford Fire Department Captain Dwight Emmons said the fire destroyed a piece of logging equipment despite the efforts of a Maine Forest Service helicopter to protect it.

Firefighters from seven neighboring communities battled the fire, which was located in a remote area about 2,000 feet from the road.

Emmons said the fire scene was being logged. The owner of the logging operation helped crews by digging a fire line around the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
