A gas leak at a downtown Portland hotel has been fixed, a spokesman for the gas utility said.

Alec O’Meara, a spokesman for Unitil, said an internal valve was damaged while unrelated work was performed at the Hampton Inn on Fore Street around 3 p.m. Wednesday. When a crew from from Unitil arrived, the pipe had already been capped, cutting off gas to the site of the damage, O’Meara said.

A Unitil technician turned off the gas supply and checked the hotel and found that there was an odor of gas, but no measurable readings.

It’s not clear whether the hotel was evacuated while the safety checks were made.

O’Meara said repairs were made and the gas was turned back on by 4:30 p.m.
