The Indianapolis Colts promoted Westbrook native Trevor Bates from the practice squad to their 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Bates, a rookie linebacker who starred at the University of Maine, was selected by the Colts in the seventh round of the NFL draft last spring. He had been released during the final wave of roster cuts at the end of training camp. Bates was later signed to the practice squad, where he spent the first four weeks of the season.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Bates was a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection while playing defensive end for Maine. He led the Black Bears with 7.5 sacks last season.

Also on Tuesday, Colts released cornerback Antonio Cromartie and placed inside linebacker Sio Moore on waivers. Both had started the first four games.

RAVENS: Running back Justin Forsett, who rushed for 1,266 yards in 2014, has been released after asking for an opportunity to play elsewhere.

Forsett was on the inactive list last Sunday and was expected to drop down the depth chart after the return of injured rookie Kenneth Dixon.

Coach John Harbaugh promised that the team will reassess security measures after a 55-year-old season ticket holder suffered a severe brain injury Sunday in an alleged fight with Oakland Raiders fans at M&T Bank Stadium.

Joseph Bauer remained in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Monday.

Two men from Westchester County, New York, have been charged with assault.

CARDINALS: Quarterback Carson Palmer, currently in concussion protocol after being knocked out of a 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams this past weekend, could still play against the 49ers on Thursday night, Coach Bruce Arians said.

If Palmer is unable to play Thursday night at Levi’s Stadium, backup Drew Stanton will get the call.

Arizona will be without running back Chris Johnson and safety Tyvon Branch for at least eight weeks as both players were placed on injured reserve after suffering groin injuries Sunday.

RAIDERS: Oakland signed linebacker Perry Riley Jr. and placed linebacker Ben Heeney on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Riley spent six seasons with Washington, where in 2013 he led the team with 112 tackles.

JAGUARS: Left guard Luke Joeckel could miss the rest of the season after injuring his left knee Sunday against the Colts.

The second overall draft pick in 2013, Joeckel might have played his final game in Jacksonville. The Jaguars declined to pick up a fifth-year option in his rookie contract and signed free agent Kelvin Beachum to a five-year, $45 million contract to compete with Joeckel at left tackle.
