SOUTH HIRAM — On Senior Night, what’s a junior to do?

Natasha Silva of Sacopee Valley wasn’t certain.

“I was afraid I wasn’t going to get much playing time,” she said after Coach Kevin Murphy started 10 seniors for their regular-season home finale on a chilly Monday night. “Then, he put me in, I thought, ‘This is their last game. We’ve got to win this.’ “

Silva made the most of her time on the field, scoring once in each half to lead the unbeaten Hawks to a 3-0 girls’ soccer victory over visiting Waynflete.

It was the ninth shutout of the season for Sacopee Valley goalkeeper Madison Day, who thwarted a penalty shot for the second game in row, having preserved a scoreless tie with Freeport on Saturday. The Hawks (10-0-2) have allowed only three goals all season, one in their past 10 games.

“They’re a very good team and we’re a very good team,” Day said, “and we’ve always had a lot of competition between each other.”

Either Waynflete (7-3-2) or Sacopee Valley has represented their region in the past four Class C state championship games. They Flyers took the 2012 and 2013 titles and the Hawks the 2014 crown.

They met last month in Portland and Sacopee Valley came away with a 2-0 victory, scoring both goals in the second half. On Monday, after a brief ceremony honoring seniors from both squads, Sacopee Valley wasted two good early opportunities on direct kicks within 25 yards. The first drifted right and the second left.

Waynflete responded with pressure from Ava Farrar and Amelia Bertaska, who rattled a shot off Day from close range.

“We created a lot of opportunities,” Bertaska said. “That’s all we can do. We just didn’t put it away. But it’s always tough to play these guys. They’re a good team.”

Sacopee Valley broke through in the 23rd minute when a Waynflete offsides trap attempt didn’t work, leaving Annette Humphrey free after a pass from McKenzie Murphy. Humphrey curled a shot just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.

“We have been against their offsides trap for four years now,” Humphrey said. “We’ve learned how to work it, work the diagonal pass, and it was a good through-ball from Kenzie Murphy.”

Six minutes later, Silva buried the rebound after Waynflete keeper Ali Pope blocked a shot from Destini Rand to make it 2-0.

With a little over two minutes remaining before the half, Waynflete’s Isabel Canning lined up for a penalty kick against Day, who lunged to her left to block Canning’s hard drive.

“Isabel stepped in and hit it,” said Waynflete Coach Todd Dominski. “It was a good, close shot and she made a fantastic save on it.”

Day finished with nine saves. Pope made eight.

“I read their direction,” Day said. “Freshman year, I made a pretty good PK save at Maranacook in one of our playoff games. Ever since then, it’s just been what I do. I embrace that.”

Silva finished off the scoring with just under eight minutes remaining after a perfect set-up from Murphy split the Waynflete defense.

“Maybe we’ll see them later on in playoffs,” said Waynflete’s Bertaska. “That’s what it really comes down to. So hopefully, if that happens, we can pull through there.”
