Rep. Christopher Babbidge, D-Kennebunk, is facing a challenge from Bradley Ducharme, a Republican from Kennebunk, in the race for the District 8 seat in the Maine House.

District 8 covers part of Kennebunk.

Babbidge, 67, is a retired teacher who has served three terms in the Maine House of Representatives. He said his priorities are to promote the economy, support seniors, reduce energy costs, promote conservation and clean energy, and preserve Maine’s quality of life. He supports referendum efforts to require expanded background checks for gun purchases and increase the minimum wage, but he opposes marijuana legalization.

Ducharme, 61, owns Shorelands Guest Resort in Kennebunk. He has never held elected office and said his management and business leadership skills would help bridge the partisan divide in the State House. Ducharme did not state his positions on the referendum questions on the state ballot. But if voters legalize marijuana, he said he would like to see a tax on marijuana sales to pay for addiction treatment as a way to help address the rise in opiate overdoses.
