A section of Main Street in Westbrook was closed and buildings were evacuated because of a gas leak Monday morning.

The gas leak was reported shortly after 8 a.m. at a construction site on Dunn Street. A worker at a sewer project hit the gas line, according to police.

Main Street was closed between the Westbrook Arterial and Stroudwater Street for about an hour, according to Westbrook police. The road reopened just before 9:30 a.m.

Police reported the fire department was on scene dealing with the leak. They had to evacuate about 10 people while the leak was contained.
