UConn women win again; streak reaches 79

Katie Lou Samuelson put up a career-high in points for the second consecutive game, scoring 29 and leading No. 2 UConn to a 98-65 win over Dayton on Tuesday night in women’s basketball.

The Huskies have the nation’s longest winning streak at 79.

Alaina Coates scored 16 points as No. 3 South Carolina (4-0) handed visiting St. Peter’s (0-4) its 19th straight loss, 93-38, in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge.

MEN: Bryson Scott scored 18 points and John Konchar made the go-ahead free throw with 1:19 left in overtime to give Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (3-2) a stunning 71-68 upset over No. 3 Indiana (3-1) at Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Freshman guard Kyle Guy scored 20 points in 13 minutes, and No. 7 Virginia (4-0) ran off 26 consecutive points to end the first half of a 90-34 victory against Grambling State (1-3).

Dillon Brooks hit a long 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in overtime and scored 17 points, lifting No. 13 Oregon (3-2) to a 69-65 victory over Tennessee (1-3) at the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: The first 12-goal game in 25 Champions League seasons took the spotlight from Real Madrid and Juventus advancing to the Round of 16.

It ended Borussia Dortmund 8, Legia Warsaw 4 – beating the Champions League’s previous best set by Monaco’s 8-3 win over Deportivo La Coruna in November 2003.

The record-breaking goal in stoppage time was an own goal forced by Germany forward Marco Reus.

BOXING

OBIT: Alex Stewart, a heavyweight contender who fought Mike Tyson and nearly beat George Foreman, has died. He was 52.

Stewart died last week after being rushed to a hospital in Mount Vernon, New York, said Mike Gilberg, a close friend. He had a blood clot in his lung, Gilberg said.

BASEBALL

MAJORS: The Baltimore Orioles have hired Roger McDowell to be their pitching coach. McDowell, 55, replaces Dave Wallace, who retired after the 2016 season.

ROAD RACING

DOPING: Prosecutors in Kenya withdrew doping charges against banned marathon runner Rita Jeptoo’s former manager, Federico Rosa, saying they wanted to conduct more investigations.
