Former Boston catcher Varitek to headline Sea Dogs’ annual charity dinner on Jan. 13

Former Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek will headline the 2017 Portland Sea Dogs Hot Stove Dinner and Silent Auction, which benefits the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. The event will take place on Friday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sable Oaks Marriott in South Portland. Additional guests will be announced.

Tickets are $60 and can be purchased in person at the Hadlock Field ticket office, by phone at 879-9500 or at www.seadogs.com. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with a silent auction running until 7 p.m. A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 7 p.m. Everyone who attends will receive an autographed 8-by-10 photo of Varitek.

HIGH SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ HOCKEY: Kristina Cornelio scored five goals, including three in the first period, as St. Dominic (2-0) beat Brunswick (1-1) 11-1 at Auburn.

Alexandra Hammerton and Avery Lutraykowski each added a pair of goals for the Saints. Beth Labbe scored for Brunswick.

SOCCER

MLS: Benoit Cheyrou and Tosaint Ricketts scored 2 minutes apart in extra time and host Toronto FC advanced to the MLS Cup final, outlasting the Montreal Impact 5-2 in the rain for a 7-5 aggregate victory.

Toronto will host the Seattle Sounders on Dec. 10 in the MLS championship game, becoming the first Canadian team to play for the title.

GOLF

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Jim Carter birdied the final three holes for a 6-under 66 and the second-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ qualifying tournament at Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The 55-year-old Carter had an 8-under 136 total on Disney’s Magnolia Course. He’s playing Q-School for the fourth year in a row after finishing 47th on the money list.

First-round leader Scott Parel (72), Skip Kendall (70) and Jose Coceres (71) were tied for second..

HOCKEY

NHL: Anders Lee scored the tie-breaking goal with 27 seconds left and the New York Islanders won 5-3 at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
