CLEMSON, S.C. — Victoria Cardaci and Nelly Perry each hit a pair of 3-pointers as Clemson opened the fourth quarter with a 17-5 run to pull away for a 69-61 win over Maine in a women’s basketball game Friday afternoon.

Maine (3-5) was within four points of the unbeaten Tigers (8-0) after three quarters, trailing 47-43, but Cardaci and Perry helped Clemson quickly stretch its lead to 16.

Sigi Koizar led Maine with 21 points, including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. No one else reached double figures for the Black Bears.

Maine held a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased its margin to 25-18 on a Julie Brosseau free throw, but Clemson ended the half on an 11-4 run to forge a 29-29 tie.

There were four lead changes in the third quarter. Maine’s last lead was 41-39 after a 3-pointer by Koizar.

Aliyah Collier paced the Tigers after intermission, scoring 11 of her 13 points in the second half. Perry finished with 21 points and six assists, while Danielle Edwards added 20 points.

Maine’s next two games at home at the Cross Insurance Center, against Northeastern on Wednesday night and Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 2, BOWDOIN 1: The Mules (4-1-0, 3-0-0) scored twice in a two-minute span in the third period to defeat the Polar Bears (3-3, 1-2 NESCAC) in Brunswick.

Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead on Cody Todesco’s unassisted short-handed goal with 17 seconds remaining in the second period.

Colby tied it just 33 seconds into the third period on an unassisted power-play goal by Kienan Scott. Less than two minutes later, Cam MacDonald scored the winning goal, assisted by Kevin Doherty.

Colby goalie Andrew Tucci stopped 41 shots, while Peter Cronin recorded 34 saves for Bowdoin.

The rivals meet again Saturday night at Colby’s Alfond Rink.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Brett Kilar made 16 saves as the Pilgrims (6-3, 3-2 New England Hockey Conference) shut out the Huskies (5-5, 2-4) in Gorham.

New England College got an even-strength goal from Carlos Fornaris and a power-play goal from William Riise in a span of 4:11 early in the second period and carried a 2-0 lead into the second intermission.

Andreas Zollner added a power-play goal midway through the third period, assisted by Patrick DeBlois. Shawn Watson capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.

Kyle Shapiro stopped 22 shots for Southern Maine.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

HAMILTON 3, COLBY 0: Megan Ahern recorded two goals and an assist – all in the first period – and the Continentals (2-2, 2-1 NESCAC) rolled to a win over the Mules (0-4-1, 0-2-1) in Waterville.

Sarah Fisher opened the scoring 5:34 into the game, assisted by Ahern and Katie Parkman. Ahern scored on a power play at 12:09, with Emily Williams and Teagan Blackwell picking up assists, then added an unassisted tally just 4:25 later.

Colby goalie Hannah Insuik turned aside 30 shots, while Sam Walther had 16 saves in the shutout.
