A man was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center following a fire at his Rockport home early Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the Vinal Street home around 3:30 a.m. after a fire broke out in a mobile home and a neighbor found the homeowner, Bruce Fales, 64, at the bottom of the driveway. Fales lives at the home alone.

He was initially taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, and then was transported to Maine Med.

The home was almost completely destroyed by the time firefighters arrived, said Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley. Peasley said he wasn’t sure of the cause.

Three investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene.

Eighteen firefighters from Rockport responded to the fire and remained at the scene until about 7:15 a.m. Peasley said help from other departments was initially called, but was canceled because the driveway was about a quarter-mile long and it would have been difficult to get extra equipment to the scene.
