KENNEBUNK — Don Abbott looked to the end of his Wells High girls’ basketball bench and saw four injured players, among them starter Halee Ramsdell. And he wasn’t worried.

“That’s why we have 14 kids on the team,” he said. “We always preach that you never know when your time’s going to come.”

It came Tuesday night for junior forward Megan Schneider. Starting for the injured Ramsdell, Schneider scored seven points in the final quarter, including the go-ahead basket, to lift Wells to a tense 41-38 victory over Kennebunk in an interclass game.

The Warriors trailed by three entering the final quarter but Schneider and Natalie Thurber led the comeback. Thurber scored six of her team-high 13 points in the fourth. Schneider, who had 11 points, scored the go-ahead basket with 35 seconds left.

“We’ll take it,” said Abbott. “That was a fun win.”

The victory lifted Wells to 6-2 in Class B South. Kennebunk lost its third straight to drop to 5-5 in Class A South.

Kennebunk started slowly, scoring only two points in the first quarter to fall behind 11-2. But a switch to man-to-man defense sparked the Rams in the second, which ended in a 19-19 tie.

Kennebunk took a five-point lead late in the third quarter on a three-point play by Madison Lux, who put back an offensive rebound, was fouled and converted the free throw. Two foul shots by Thurber cut the deficit to 28-25 entering the fourth.

Kennebunk twice opened a five-point lead in the fourth, first on a 3-pointer by Jessica Dupler from the right wing, making it 34-29, then on a drive by Sierra Tartre with 6:17 remaining to make it 36-31. The Rams scored one basket the rest of the way.

“We just made way too many mental mistakes,” said Rams Coach Rob Sullivan. “It was frustrating the way it slipped away. It was a big opportunity for our kids.”

Anya Chase of Wells hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to cut it to 36-34. Then baskets by Schneider and Thurber gave Wells a 38-36 lead. Tartre came up with a steal and layup to make it 38-38 with 2:30 left, but that was it for the Rams.

Schneider gave Wells the lead with a nice move, getting the ball at the foul line and driving hard to the right, banking the shot in. “I saw kind of an opening so I curled around,” she said. “The girl had me by the arm but I just pushed through that and got in. I was confident to do that because my teammates were helping me.”

She hit a foul shot with three seconds left for the final point.

“I’m really just doing the best I can to help the team and being able to step up when we have players down,” said Schneider.

Thurber, who missed time in the second quarter when she rolled her ankle, said this was a “great team win. We just had to do it together.”

Abbott agreed, saying, “They all contributed. That’s the way we try to play. I can go right down the line and point out the contributions everybody made tonight.”

Lux and Marran Oakman each scored 11 for Kennebunk.
