Bank of America has donated $45,000 to Portland Adult Education for the New Mainers Resource Center, to be disbursed over three years to the resource center, which serves immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees.

The program helps immigrants with professional skills, employment, job readiness skills, financial management and networking, among other services. The services are intended to help new Mainers overcome barriers to enter the workforce.

Some of the courses are designed to help Mainers with limited English language skills searching for their first job in the US. Students learn how to search for a job and expand their language skills for the workplace.

Maine employers also participate in the program by visiting the classroom to share information about their companies, providing interview practice and hiring students. Graduates from this program receive a competency certificate and job search support.

A graduation ceremony for the most recent class of students was held in November, where Bank of America presented its donation.

“We are pleased to be able to support Portland Adult Ed’s continuing work to ensure new Mainers are given the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Todd Beacham, senior vice president and market manager for Maine and Vermont for Bank of America.
