A Scarborough woman has been charged with embezzling from a Falmouth doctor’s office where she worked.

Carrie Caporino, 45, was arrested Tuesday and faces a federal charge of embezzling from a health care benefit program. The federal charges result from a Department of Justice program crackdown on health care fraud.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Caporino, who was the office manager for the practice, took about 600 checks worth about $250,000 that were payable to the practice and instead put them in her personal bank account.

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
