UMaine women’s soccer plays to tie in opener

The University of Maine women’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against LIU-Brooklyn in its season opener Sunday in Orono.

Aline Allmann recorded six saves for the Blackbirds (0-1-1), while Annalena Kriebisch stopped four shots for the Black Bears (0-0-1).

BASEBALL

EMPIRE LEAGUE: The Sullivan Explorers (23-35) took an 8-0 lead after two innings and cruised to a 13-5 victory over the Old Orchard Beach Surge (33-25) in the first game of a doubleheader in Loch Sheldrake, New York.

Roger Diaz led the Explorers with four hits and five RBI. Kyle Schade recorded three hits and two RBI for the Surge.

In the second game, Brandon Young drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to lead the Explorers to a 2-1 victory.

TENNIS

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza got another trophy in her breakthrough summer, beating a player who can’t quite get to No. 1.

Muguruza defeated Simona Halep 6-1, 6-0 for her first Western & Southern Open title in Mason, Ohio, needing only 56 minutes to extend her run of success.

She also denied Halep yet another chance to ascend to No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

In the men’s bracket, seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov won his first ATP Masters title, beating Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-5. The Bulgarian had never played a Masters final.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Will Power held off Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, to win the IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway for the second straight year.

Power’s third win of the season gave his championship run a serious boost with three races left in the season.

The Australian made all the right moves over the final few laps to cut off Newgarden and end the American’s bid for three straight victories.

MLS: Jonathan Lewis scored in stoppage time to help host New York City FC beat the New England Revolution 2-1 for its third straight victory.

The 20-year-old rookie has scored his only two MLS goals in back-to-back games.

SPANISH LEAGUE: Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t missed by his team as Gareth Bale scored one goal and set up another to help Real Madrid start its defense of the Spanish league title with a 3-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna.

FRENCH LEAGUE: Neymar was in unstoppable form in his home debut for Paris Saint-Germain, with the Brazil star scoring twice and playing a role in the other four goals as PSG routed Toulouse 6-2 to move top of the French league.

GYMNASTICS

U.S. MEN: The generational shift is well underway for the U.S. men’s Olympic gymnastics program. It’s just not completely over.

Two-time Olympian Sam Mikulak and 2016 bronze medalist Alex Naddour both overcame injuries to make the six-man 2017 world championship team announced Sunday. Donnell Whittenburg, an alternate on the 2016 Olympic team and a two-time world championship team member, also made the squad that will travel to Montreal in October.

Yul Moldauer, who won the all-around title at the U.S. championships on Saturday, made his first world championship team.
