OUTLOOK: Second-seeded Scarborough is in the state championship match for the fourth time in five years. The Red Storm defeated Greely to win the title in 2015. … Fifth-ranked South Portland is making its first appearance in the state final after upsetting top-seeded Deering in the semifinals. It’s just the second time in the program’s five-year history that the Red Riots have played in the postseason. … Scarborough is led by sophomore middle hitter Asia Mattress (121 kills, 22 digs, 21 blocks this season), who had 13 kills, two blocks and four aces in a semifinal win Wednesday over Bidde- ford. But the Red Storm also have great depth, with two setters – starter Ivy DiBiase and backup freshman Mayne Gwyer – and senior outside hitter Natalie Simonton (117 kills, 89 digs). … South Portland lost to Scarborough 3-0 during the regular season. But the Red Riots also lost to Deering 3-0 in the regular season before defeating the Rams on Wednesday. Senior Molly Mawhinney (163 kills, 103 digs) had 18 kills against Deering. Kaleisha Towle, a sophomore middle hitter, has 48 blocks, 115 digs and 76 kills.
