New farmers markets sprouting up around state

Portland’s outdoor farmers market began last Saturday in Deering Oaks.

But did you know there are new markets starting up this year in Freeport, Yarmouth, Biddeford, Lewiston, Sullivan, Union, Brooks and Princeton?

The Freeport markets will be held Fridays, beginning in late May, from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Cricket Hunt School on Route 1, and from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on the L.L. Bean Campus.

The Yarmouth market will be held from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning in June at the Town Hall Green on Main Street.

Book show outside Boston will feature Rabelais exhibit

Don Lindgren of Rabelais, Portland’s culinary bookstore at 86 Middle St., will be a featured exhibitor at the Book & Paper Exposition & Sale in Wilmington, Mass., on Saturday.

The show will feature cookbooks from the Rabelais collection that are among the oldest in America, including an 1806 edition of “American Cookery” by Amelia Simmons. Also on display will be a special wartime edition of the “American Woman’s Cookbook” from 1944, which contains a special section on kitchen gardening, and a 1943 edition of Irma Rombauer’s “Joy of Cooking.”

The show will be held at the Shriner’s Auditorium, 99 Fordham Road (off Route 93 and 15 minutes outside Boston), from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7. Students with a college ID or are under age 18 get in free. For more information, go to bookandpaperexpo.com.

Five-course wine dinner will be served at Local 188

Local 188 at 685 Congress St. will host a five-course wine dinner May 16.

Courses include dishes such as seared scallops, braised rabbit ravioli and citrus-glazed pork roulade.
The dinner costs $75 plus tax and gratuity, and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Wineries, chocolatiers offer pairings on Mother’s Day

Treat your mom to wine, spirits and chocolates on Mother’s Day, when the owners of Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery, and Sweetgrass Farm Winery and Distillery open their doors to local chocolatiers.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Savage Oakes will team up with Coastline Confections of South Portland and Cali Mandi Fine Candies of Union to offer pairings of wine and chocolates. Sweetgrass Farm will host Dean’s Sweets of Portland and Maine Mud of Weld.

Dean’s Sweets will pair its truffles and salt caramels dipped in dark chocolate with the winery’s Blueberry Smash. Or try the Sweetgrass Apple Brandy with Maine Mud’s mocha chocolate.

Moms will receive a free Proven Winner pansy, while supplies last, grown locally by 7 Tree Farm and Greenhouse.

Music will be provided by Richard Limouze, a finger-style guitarist, singer and songwriter.
