Locavore wannabes:

Saturday is your lucky day

The fifth annual Backyard Locavore Day, a self-guided tour of Cumberland County vegetable gardens, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine.

Backyard Locavore Day is all about becoming a locavore, or someone who eats food that is grown or produced locally. Featured gardens on the tour are located in Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Freeport, North Yarmouth, Portland, South Portland, Windham, Raymond and Yarmouth.

Each garden session will feature specific food-preservation methods such as drying, hot-water-bath canning and making herbal vinegars and jam, with free food samples. There will also be demonstrations and talks on gardening methods, including vegetable and square-foot gardening, backyard composting, greenhouses, beekeeping and backyard poultry.

Registration is $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the event. Children under 12 get in free. Proceeds will go to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension's Cumberland County Food Preservation Program.

Next 'Supperpie' pop-up dinner will be Thursday

The second "Supperpie" pop-up dinner from traveling chef Rocco Salvatore Talarico will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at a location that is disclosed to guests 48 hours before the dinner.

The nine-course dinner costs $150 and includes beer and wine.

BUXTON

Loring joins chef team for Flanagan's Table series

Another boldface name has been added to the impressive lineup of chefs cooking this summer and fall at the Flanagan's Table dinner series in Buxton. Jason Loring of Portland's Nosh Kitchen Bar will cook on Aug. 19.

The five-course dinner begins with a reception at 6 p.m., and reservations are now open at $100 per person with welcome drink and two glasses of wine; $120 per peson includes wine with each course.

Served inside The Barn at Flanagan Farm, the dinners are in partnership with Maine Farmland Trust, which receives a portion of the proceeds. Menus feature local ingredients, wine and Maine beer.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H.

HookFest features fun and Redhook brews Aug. 17

Redhook Brewery, 1 Redhook Way, is throwing a backyard barbecue bash featuring music, beer and lawn games at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 17.

Live music will begin at 3:30 p.m.

HookFest 2013 costs $20 in advance and $30 at the door. Once inside, it's a cash-only event.

Shawn Mullins to sing for benefit of food pantry

Singer/songwriter Shawn Mullins will perform at Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery at 2 p.m. Aug. 18 to benefit the Come Spring Food Pantry. Mullins is best known for the 1998 single "Lullaby," which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

The concert is free, but donations of cash and non-perishable food will be accepted.

The concert will begin at 2 p.m, but seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to come early and bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Savage Oakes wine, beer, and a variety of food will be served from noon until 4 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine.

The non-profit Come Spring Food Pantry was founded as a community service project for the Come Spring School, a private school for children with special needs. The school has closed, but the food pantry remains, feeding the hungry of rural midcoast Maine.
