Extension will offer beekeeping courses

If becoming a beekeeper is your thing, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension will be holding four beekeeping courses.

Master beekeepers Jack Hildreth and Peter Richardson will teach the fall Beginning Beekeeping School at the University of Southern Maine in Portland from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 16 to Nov. 13.

Richardson and master beekeeper Chris Rogers will teach another Beginning Beekeeping class in spring at the extension office, 75 Clearwater Drive in Falmouth. That group will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 12 to March 13.

The fee for both beginner schools is $90, which covers a textbook and reference notebook. If two family members would like to attend together, the fee is $130 and includes a textbook and notebook to share.

Master beekeeper Erin MacGregor-Forbes will teach a two-night workshop on Honeybee Disease & Pest Management at the Falmouth extension office from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and Nov. 12. A $40 fee covers workshop materials.

Finally, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 12, Hildreth and MacGregor-Forbes will teach an intermediate level course in aviary management at USM in Portland. A $130 fee includes a textbook. Two family members may attend for $180 if they share a textbook.

Sunday wine tastings designed to educate

Flock and Vine, 541 Ocean House Road, is starting a series of Sunday night seminars to educate people about wine through tastings.

The first one, “How to Blind Taste,” will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.

Distiller will release blueberry moonshine

Get a taste of blueberry moonshine at Maine Craft Distilling’s launch party for its newest product at 4 p.m. Friday.

The distiller will release “Blueshine” at its East Bayside distillery located at 101 Fox St. Anyone 21 or older is invited. Wear blue to be one of the first 100 customers to receive a free shot glass. (Blue jeans don’t count.)

The “Blueshine Band,” a bluegrass band, will perform starting at 5 p.m.

Blueshine is made with Maine blueberries, Maine maple syrup and locally grown barley.
