Music and Nightlife: State show qualifies as big, gigantic even

CELEBRATE Valentine's Day with some big beats. Big Gigantic is known for big beats, thunderous bass and frenetic melodies. The big sound has made the band -- excuse our overuse -- big in the worlds of EDM and hip-hop. Kill Paris and Manic Focus open.

Art and Theater: Jazz trio to riff on Stravinsky

PORTLAND OVATIONS brings The Bad Plus to USM's Hannaford Hall for an evening of jazz. The trio will perform Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in a multimedia concert that integrates live video into the performance.

Et Cetera: A fun way to enjoy all that snow

GO AHEAD, embrace the snow. One good way to do that is to head out to the Second Annual Loon Echo Land Trust Snowfest in South Bridgton. There will be cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowman making contests and more.

Music and Nightlife: Get mod, and get on over to Empire

IF YOU’RE a cheap date (and there’s nothing wrong with that), spend Valentine’s Day night at Empire Dine and Dance for free. Kurt Milton Baker is headlining a “Valentine’s Mod Night” at the club, so dress in your mod finery and try to act just a tad more cool than you normally would.

Et Cetera: Laser magic with a far-out soundtrack

THE NAME says it all: Laseropolloza 2013. The Southworth Planetarium at USM is hosting full-dome laser shows Friday through Feb. 24. Some of the shows will be accompanied by the music of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles or Pink Floyd, while others have titles like "Laser Hypnotica."
